The best semla in Malmo
Welcome to the unofficial guide to finding the best semla in Malmo! Two years ago I made a map with some of my favourites but there are a lot of new bakeries on the scene this year, so I set out to do some very serious research to deliver the most up-to-date guide that I could! As always, I’ve found some alternatives if the classic semla isn’t really for you, as well as the break out stars of the 2026 season.
In no particular order, below is a short guide to finding the best semla in Malmo!
Illustrated semla guide by Megan McKean
Bageri Baka - newly opened in Vastra Hamnen, with all sorts of delicious treats. Their stand out semla item is the pistachio semla!
Orum Bageri - my number one pick of the semlor this year, so nice we’ve gone back twice! Orum caramelise their almonds that sit on top of the mandelmassa (almond paste) and has the perfect not-too-sweet dollop of squiggly cream on top
Deg - brand new bakery and has had a queue out the front since the moment they opened. Their semla bun is a little more cakey and sweet than some of the other classics, but incredibly tasty - and sports the most satisfyingly plump, perfectly round ball of cream!
St Jakobs - the classic! Multiple locations, so you’re never too far from a semla in a pinch! A little bigger than some of the competitors, with slivered almonds on top of the almond paste.
Patisserie David - a French staple on Gamla Stad, and I love peering in the bakery windows each February and seeing the racks and racks of semla waiting to go out!
Dame Ginette - if you’re looking for a semla adjacent treat, Dame Ginette is your place to go. This new French cafe and bistro is one of my favourite spots in Malmo, and in place of traditional semlor they offer semla-inspired eclairs and macarons!
Bullarbyn Bageri - another new addition to Malmo’s bakery scene, Bullarbyn always add their own twist to the classics. The semla was no exception, and along with the classic almond semla, they also have a chocolate and hazelnut creation.
Farina - the Italian bakery is still in my top 3, their buns towering with cream with the sweetest little bread hat balanced on top. Delicious!
